The story opens with Ryan getting shot and killed in Middlebury Indiana, Amber standing right next to him.  A month prior Ryan begins showing interest in a young Amish woman named Marsha despite the fact that there was an eighteen year age difference between them.

When bad poetry about poison pies begin showing up in Amber’s pastry case the threats make Amber fearful of poison laced pies so she sends them to be tested.
